Richard Buckwalter, 97, passed away September 3, 2016 with family at bedside at his home in Brethren Village. He was the son of the late Joel W. and Lizzy A. (Myer) Buckwalter, and husband of 70 years to Betty Jane (Nolt) Buckwalter who preceded him in 2013.
After his 4 1/2 years of service in CPS at the Forest Service base camp in Kane, PA and later at the Lyons Veterans Hospital, NJ, he started as part-time barber at Roy Bomberger’s Store in Elm in 1947, while also working for N.G. Hershey & Son, a farm implements dealer in Manheim. He opened Buckwalter’s Barber Shop in Bareville in 1954 and continued the business for 45 years, until closing the shop at age 80.
A lifetime member of the Conestoga Church of the Brethren, serving as church treasurer for many years, Richard enjoyed gardening, and loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by a son, Dennis, and seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; but was preceded in death by son, Richard Owen, daughter, Karen Graham and six brothers: John, Lester, J. Paul, Robert, Joel Jr., and Harold.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. (Visitation at 9:30) Saturday, September 24, 2016, at Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 141 E. Main St., Leola, PA. Memorials may be made to the “Buckwalter Peace Endowment” c/o Bethany Theological Seminary, 615 National Road West, Richmond, IN 47374.
